Engineering education deals with the application of scientific knowledege for practical purposes involving activities like planning , designing, manufacturing and operation of machinery and mechanisms. In short engineering education intends to equip one with profound theorotical knowledege and rich hands on practical experience. This strenghts the dictum that an engineer is one who learns by doing and does by learning. The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started with a B.Tech degree in year 1997 with an intake of 60 and later enhanced to 90 in 2002 and further to 120 in 2006.
The department has the following laboratories:
Production Technology Lab and workshop practice:
Students get hands - on experience on Lathes, Milling, Drilling, Shaping, Slotting & Grinding Machines and also in various production processes like foundry, forging, Welding and plastic moulding. The laboratories are provided with excellent equipment in frontier areas of technology.
Metal Forming Research Lab::
This Lab is developed for advanced research in the frontier areas of flow forming for strategic materials. The unique facilities like special purpose press, data acquisition systems, high temparature forming and testing facilities provide oppurtunities for advanced research. Latest softwares such as dynaform, LS-dyna are made available
Material Sciences & Metallurgy Lab:
Various Ferrous and Non-ferrous materials are studied with help of micro scopes for their microstructure, hardness, toughness and tensile strengths. Computer software with camera for analysing and strong microstructure data is available. The lab is equipped with latest equipment in tune with the technological advancement in the relevent field.
Fuels Lab:
Fuel charecteristics, like viscosity, calorific value, flash point etc. are analyzed fossil fuels and greases using visco meters calorimeters etc. A junker's calorimeter and a Bomb calorimeter satisfy the required needs for the determination of the calorific value of the solid liquid and gaseous fuels.
IC Engines Lab:
Petrol and Diesel engines are studied for thier characteristics, Like thermal efficency fuel combustions, power output, economic speed etc. The latest rigs have been provided to take care of exhaustive study leading to reaserch. A test rig has been provided the characteristic of refrigirator and air conditioning.
Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery Lab:
The latest version of the impulse type and reaction type turbines. Pelton turbine and Francis turbine/ Kaplan turbine are installed for studying the various operational characteristics like efficency, run away speeds etc. reciprocating and centrifugal pumps are installed to study thier performance and characteristics. Equipment like jet apparatus, Bernoullis equipment, notches, orifices and mouth piece have been installed for studying flow velocities.
Strength of Materials Lab:
Material properties such as, tensile strength, hardness, impact strength, shear strength etc are experimentally measured using torsion, impact,Brinell and Rockwell Hardness testing machines. A 40- tom capacity universal testing machine with necessary software for interfacing computer has been installed to study the details for checking mechanical properties of the materials.
Heat Transfer Lab:
Thermal conductivity, Heat transfer coefficient, Stefan - Boltzmann constant for various materials are evaluated using various apparatus. These test rigs have been standardised for conducting experiments so that the students will have hand on experience in the field of heat transfer.
Mechanical Measurements and Control Systems Lab:
Pressure, Temperature, Strain acceleration and vibration are measured using mechanical pneumatic and electro mechanic devices. The latest equipment hin this field has been installed and facilities provided for testing and analysis in order that the students have a hands on experience.
CAD/CAM Lab:
Equipment has been installed for the development of part drawings using drafting packages, generation of various 3D models, feature based and boolean based surface and assembly modelling using different software. Structural analysis and heat treatment analysis, development of NC code and providing suitable code and machinary have facilated machining of simple components on CNC machines through RS232. CAD/CAM lab is having the excellent and latest versions of softwares which include Iron CADv-14, Pro-Engineeringv-Wild Fire2.0, ANSYS 8.1, Catiav-5 & Auto CAD 2000.
Manufacturing Simulation Lab:
Flexsim, an object oriented manufacturing simulation software with high end systems have been installed for AGV planning, ASRS simulation and performance eveluation, AGV's and ASRS integrated problems,JIT system, Material handling systems, MRP problems and shop floor scheduling etc .
Machine Tools & Metrology Lab:
Apart from conventional machine tools and measuring instruments, this lab provides opurtunity for students to work on capstan and turret lathes. |
